Travelers looking for old ambiance with modern amenities should make a visit to Hotel Peter and Paul in New Orleans. The historic, 19th-century site consists of four buildings — a church, rectory, schoolhouse and convent — that have been transformed into a 71-guestroom hotel.
Travelers will feel as if they’ve stepped back in time, assisted by the hotel’s color palettes, which, we’re told, were common among religious paintings and tapestries dating back to the 14th to 18th centuries in Europe and Africa. History buffs will particularly admire the features of the old building that remain, such as cypress wood moldings, stained-glass windows, wainscoted corridors, marble fireplaces and the original rectory flag pole, which now hosts the Hotel Peter and Paul flag.
Our favorite room option is The Rector’s Repose; this room has a king bed, floor-to-ceiling, slip-head windows, custom Italian linens and a custom limestone bathtub. Tip: It can be combined with an adjacent room, making it a two-bedroom, two-bath suite.
Hotel Peter and Paul also has a rotating retail space, a meeting and events area located within the restored church and — what has us most excited — food and beverage offerings in the old rectory from the team behind the James Beard-award-nominated wine bar and restaurant, Bacchanal. The F&B programming includes The Elysian Bar, whose name is derived from the heaven-like place in classical mythology. Here, guests can sample niche wines, specialty cocktails and a menu designed by chef Alex Harrell with a selection of small plates and local ingredients.
